December 14, 2009 Gwinnett County Implements Derceto Aquadapt

Gwinnett DWR

The Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources (DWR) supply drinking water for Gwinnett County residents and some neighboring communities in Georgia. Water from Lake Lanier is supplied by the Shoal Creek Filter Plant and the Lanier Filter Plant via 18 pump stations and 17 finished water storage tanks including clearwells.

In the Fall of 2006, the Gwinnett County DWR hired CH2M HILL and Derceto to study the feasibility of an energy management and operations optimization system (EMS) for the Water Production Division. The feasibility study was completed in January 2007 and the study concluded that there was the potential for Gwinnett DWR to realize significant savings and operational benefits from implementation of a real-time online EMS system. Energy cost savings available through implementation of real-time EMS are projected to be approximately 11% of the energy costs. Based on these expected benefits, a Detailed Design contract was awarded to CH2M HILL and Derceto in 2008.

The Detailed Design of the Gwinnett County DWR EMS system was completed in March of 2009 and showed additional savings and benefits, leading to the decision to proceed immediately into a full implementation project for the entire water distribution system. The Derceto Aquadapt EMS system was completed by mid December 2009.

In describing the Derceto AQUADAPT system installation and support, Water Production Director Neal Spivey recently said, “We have completed installation, commissioning and training of the Derceto Energy Management Software in the Water Production Division.  Derceto engineers were most recently on-site for about 5 weeks getting our operations staff comfortable with this new technology.  This software is now controlling production plant rates, raw water and high service pump scheduling, booster pump station operations, and filling tanks in the water distribution system.  It has quickly become a very important part of the water delivery process to Gwinnett County residents.”

July 25, 2007 Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) Achieve Real Time Savings Following Derceto Implementation

WSSC Office
WSSC (Maryland USA) utilize the Derceto software to control pump scheduling for the distribution of up to 230 MGD of water to more than 1.7 million people daily. During the first nine months of Derceto operation, startimg August 2006, Derceto has saved WSSC over $480,000 in electricity purchasing costs, and is currently exceeding savings of $120,000 per month. WSSC purchases most of the energy used for water distribution on the real time PJM electricity market. The savings Derceto is achieving are in addition to those already realised by WSSCs operations and energy management personnel and have been made possible through commitment and team work by all involved. In addition to dollar savings Derceto has been accredited with helping to identify physical restrictions in the Colesville and Bowie pressure zone which were causing pressure spikes and inconsistent flows. A number of closed 20, 16, 12 and 10 inch valves and a section of 20" pipeline that had not been completed were identified by the WSSC planning department in conjunction with the information from Derceto engineers. "Without Derceto we would not have found these problems" said Karen Wright, Group Leader Systems Control Group, WSSC.

Quick Facts

Aquadapt - the environmentally friendly solution

Electricity production at night in the Ontario market is produced primarily by nuclear and hydro generation (70%) with the remainder coming from thermal plants. Day time peak production is the other way round. By maximizing use of night energy and improving pump efficiency Aquadapt substantially reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
