Region of Peel Public Works Water Division Completes Implementation of Derceto Aquadapt Energy Management and Operations Optimization Solution

The Region of Peel deliver water to over 1,000,000 people in Ontario and are the second largest utility behind Toronto Water.

[Toronto, Canada - March 2013]  Derceto Canada Ltd the leader in energy management and operations optimization solutions for water utilities,  in collaboration with our partner AECOM today announced completed the implementation of an Aquadapt project for the Region of Peel. This substantial project applies the Aquadapt energy management and operations optimization software to the entire water production and distribution network for Region of Peel. They are the second largest municipality in Ontario and supply water to over 1,000,000 people in the cities of Brampton and Mississauga and parts of the Town of Caledon. The Region of Peel procures energy on the real time market via the Canadian ISO; the constantly changing hourly energy price making full use of the real-time optimization capabilities of Aquadapt. Peel treated and distributed 225,400 ML of water in 2012 and spends approximately $10.8 million and $11.9 million per year on electricity for treatment and pumping respectively.

On Feb. 28, 2013, Peel Regional Council endorsed the Energy and Environment Sustainability Strategy, which focuses on managing the Corporation’s energy use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. As part of the Green Energy Act, Ontario Regulation 397/11 calls for the development and implementation of energy conservation demand management plans for public agencies such as the Region of Peel.

Aquadapt is anticipated to drive significant savings in both energy cost and greenhouse gas reduction, well aligned to the Region of Peel’s corporate leadership in energy management. Peel sought to reduce energy costs by scheduling pumping operations to take advantage of hourly energy price changes and utilize “off-peak” pumping and reservoir storage and improving overall pump operating efficiency while maintaining service levels to customers.  Since Peel’s system is hydraulically complex involving dozens of pumps and thousands of kilometers of mains, the Region needed a solution that would interface directly with their Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system and control operations system-wide in real-time. The Region of Peel commenced a world-wide search for suitable technologies in 2007 and selected AECOM and Derceto to design and implement the Energy Management System (EMS).
